Robert Richards did his undergraduate work at West Virginia University and received a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. He graduated with a Masters of Science in Education from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He also attended Duquesne University's School Psychology graduate program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
